Thinking of Buying a Trampoline This Christmas?
As Christmas approaches, trampolines are once again one of the most popular backyard gifts — and it’s easy to see why. At my house, we’ve had a trampoline since my son was two years old, and it’s still the most-used piece of equipment we own. It’s a magnet for kids (and adults), and it never seems to get old.
But trampolines aren’t just fun — they’re fantastic for kids’ development, fitness and emotional wellbeing.
Surprising Benefits of Trampolining
Beyond the giggles and flips, jumping on a trampoline helps build essential life and movement skills that we as gymnastics coaches love to see.
Physical Benefits
Cardiovascular fitness – gets their heart pumping in a fun way
Core and lower-body strength – builds stability and muscle tone
Proprioception – awareness of where their body is in space
Bilateral coordination – using both sides of the body together
Spatial awareness – learning to control movement in the air
Sensory and Emotional Benefits
Self-regulation – bouncing helps kids calm and organise their emotions
Therapeutic and soothing – rhythmic movement is grounding for many kids
Heavy work – especially beneficial for children with ADHD or ASD
Why Parents Love Trampolines Too
As both a mum and a gymnastics coach, I can tell you there are extra reasons to love trampolines:
Screen-free fun – gets kids off devices and into the fresh air
Outdoor time – helps with natural regulation, vitamin D and better sleep
Good tired – physically active kids sleep soundly and happily
Important Trampoline Safety Tips
While trampolines are great fun, they do come with risks if not used correctly. Here’s how to keep things safe at home:
One at a time. Most injuries happen when multiple kids bounce together.
A safety net on a trampoline does not make it a "big kids" playpen. Don’t zip multiple kids in together and assume all will be well. Collisions are the biggest cause of injuries.
Take turns. Use a timer or counting game (e.g. 30 jumps each) to keep it fair.
Safe placement. Keep trampolines away from fences, cubbies and pools. Some of us remember our mis-spent youth jumping from the shed roof onto the trampoline — and it never ended well… but hey, it was the 80s.
No toys or household objects on the trampoline. Cricket bats, light sabres and hammers don’t belong there (yes, even those).
Pets stay off. It’s safer for both the child and the animal.
Anchor it down. In strong winds, trampolines can literally take flight.
Bare feet are best. For black mesh trampolines, use bare feet; for string beds, wear socks. Avoid shoes, studs and sharp zips to protect the mat.
